Read the Shape of the Brown First

- Set out six to eight straight-sided cans — tuna cans, cat-food tins — scattered across one zone. Some near heads, some at the midpoints between them.
- Run that zone 15 minutes. Nothing else.
- Measure the water depth in each can with a ruler and note where each can sat.
- Compare. Healthy coverage puts every can within about a quarter inch of the others. A midpoint can holding half what the rest hold is your gap, located.
- Do the math while you're there: if the average was a quarter inch in 15 minutes, that zone needs about an hour per week to hit an inch — split across two or three mornings, not daily sips.
One zone at a time. The cans also sort the problem for you: every can low means pressure or runtime. Some cans low means coverage. That distinction decides the fix.
When the Sprinklers Are Innocent
August through September is grub season in Michigan.
